E3 Is Officially Dead.

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

It's sad day for gamers. Entertainment Software Association has announced that Electronic Entertainment Expo lovingly known as E3 is dead. The ESA made the difficult decision to shut down E3 for good.

E3 was known as Christmas for gamers. For more than two decades, E3 was the biggest gaming convention around. Every summer, E3 would have huge gaming announcements and events.

E3 was going strong until 2018 when Sony pulled out of the gaming expo. Then 2020 came rolling in with the Covid -19 virus. The pandemic caused E3 to shut down its public event. It was the same year that Geoff Keighley hosted the first Summer Games Fest.

E3 held a digital only event in 2021. And expo tried to come back in 2022 but that got cancelled. ESA tried to work with Reed Pop to produce a new version of E3.

Alas, it never came to pass as Nintendo and Microsoft pulled out of E3. Sega and other publishers pulled out too. With publishers leaving and the lack of interest, the ESA and Reed Pop decided to cancel the new E3. Fast forwarding to now.

Thoughts

Personally, I am going to miss E3. I was always ecstatic when June came around. That when you knew E3 was coming. Thus I have so many fond memories of gaming announcements. My most special one was announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Other happy memories were the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailers.

While I had hope that E3 would come back in some relevant manner. It was never meant to be. And the rational part of my mind knew that.

Nevertheless, I will never forget E3. Thanks for the memories, E3. You will live on forever in my memories and others too.

How are you feeling about E3's official death? Do you have any fond memories of E3? Please share in the comments below.
