Final Fantasy X Magic: The Gathering

It's an awesome crossover between two legendary franchises.

Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering is teaming up for a collaboration. A Magic: The Gathering set will be made based on Final Fantasy! This Final Fantasy set of Magic will be part of the Universes Beyond set. The Final Fantasy set will be released on June 13, 2025. The set will range from the first Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XVI.

The collaboration was first revealed at the Magic Con: Las Vegas, hosted by Wizards of the Coast. Attendees saw the upcoming sets and the future of Magic: The Gathering. They first looked at some of the artwork for the Final Fantasy set. So far, several pieces of Magic artwork have been revealed for the FF set. They are beautiful, epic pieces that capture the iconic events of Final Fantasy.

Wangjie Li

This piece is by Wangjie Li. Here you have Sephiroth descending from the sky. Many people who have played FFVII will recognize this scene. For those who have played Rebirth, this may cause some heartbreaking emotions to resurface.

Arif Wijaya

Next, Kefka is poisoning the water while laughing manically. This beautiful, twisted scene references the scene in which Kefka poisons the water in Doma in FFVI. I love the colors. But it is awful that almost no one survives this sinister deed by Kefka. Arif Wijaya created this scene.

志勇/shiyu

This is a beautiful and powerful piece of Lightning. This scene captures Lightning perfectly. The rose petals are a nice touch. The way she charges at the views with a Blaze Saber in her hand represents Lightning as a beautiful and powerful warrior.

Joseph Weston

This is a cute little piece of the Moggle Net from Final Fantasy IX. As shown by the piece, moggles deliver mail through Moggle Net. This is the most lighthearted and chill piece of the collection so far. It has a nice balance of light and shadow that enhances the cuteness of the scene.

藤木ゆう/Yuu Fujiki

This is my favorite piece so far. This emotional, gorgeous piece shows the love between Tidus and Yuna. In Final Fantasy X, Tidus and Yuna confess their feeling for each other. This leads to an iconic, beautiful kiss the two share underwater. The artist captures their love beautifully. This breathtaking scene brings back memories and emotions of Tidus and Yuna’s watery kiss.

Néstor Ossandón Leal

The final piece is a piece of Emet-Selch, a villain of Final Fantasy XIV. I am not familiar with Emet-Selch since I haven’t played FFXIV. However, you can tell that Emet-Selch is a real villain as he looks down upon the viewer. This guy gives me chills and it seems he is getting ready to wreak havoc.

Thoughts

This is an unexpected yet awesome crossover between two franchises. While I haven’t gotten that much into Magic: The Gathering. I had a lot of friends who were into Magic back in the day.

But we were all into Final Fantasy. They loved Final Fantasy as much as I do. Seeing those two legendary franchises is incredible!

The initial art pieces are nothing short of gorgeous and amazing. And they represent each character and event with the utmost love and respect. It’s good to see that Magic is treating Final Fantasy with the reverence and love it deserves.

Frankly, these are the type of crossovers Final Fantasy needs. I hope more crossovers are coming to Final Fantasy. Plus, Final Fantasy needs more marketing and brand recognition. A collaboration with the oldest yet beloved trading card game is an excellent start for Final Fantasy in the marketing space.
