What is Reynatis?

Updated: Jun 15

A new RPG inspired by Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

Reynatis is a brand new RPG being published by Fuyuu. The game is being developed by Natsume Atari. The game was first revealed during the Japanese version of the latest Nintendo Direct. The game is releasing in Japan on July 26th.

Intrigued players were wondering if the game was going to be released worldwide. Those fears have been laid to rest. A new trailer announcing the western release of the game was released. Reynatis will be released west in the fall courtesy of NIS America.

This new action RPG draws a lot of inspiration from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. Takumi Isobe, the game's director, planner, and producer, is a huge fan of KH and FF. He grew up playing these games as he says in a recent Famitsu interview.

Inspirations

As you can see from the trailers, the game is reminiscent of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy XV, and Verum Rex. The game has an all-star cast with deep ties to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

Kazushige Nojima is writing the scenario for Reynatis. And Yoko Shimomura is composing the score for the game. Lastly, Yusuke Naora is creating the visuals for the game.

Nojima has written scenarios for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Yoko Shimomura is the principal composer for Kingdom Hearts. She was the lead composer for Final Fantasy XV and various other JRPGS. Naora was the art director of Final Fantasy XV, the Compilation of FInal Fantasy VII, and other Square Enix titles.

Shibuya - The setting for REYNATIS
Shibuya - The setting for REYNATIS

With an all-star cast from Square Enix, it is no wonder why Reynatis has a lot of ties to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. It is fascinating that Reynatis's setting is Shibuya. Kingdom Hearts 4's current known setting in Shibuya. However, KH4's Shibuya is known as Quadturum. This is the world that Sora is currently trapped in due to his actions in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Here's the overview of the game via NIS America:

"REYNATIS is an action RPG set in the painstakingly-recreated streets of Shibuya, Tokyo. In a world where fantasy meets reality, the citizens of Shibuya fear magic and the power it holds, forcing wizards to conceal their inhuman abilities or face oppression.Seeking freedom through strength, the wizard Marin heads to Shibuya, where he meets Sari, an officer of the MEA, an organization dedicated to keeping wizards under control. Conceal your magic to explore the city as a regular civilian and shop or take on quests, or use your explosive powers to reach new locations and battle those who stand in your way. Fight for what you believe in in this stylish, spellbinding RPG from director TAKUMI and featuring music by Yoko Shimomura!"

Key Features

  • Freedom vs. Order – The wizard Marin and the officer Sari stand on opposing sides of a conflict that will shake the world to its core. Experience an enthralling story that tackles oppression, clashing ideals, and the price of freedom.

  • City of Secrets – Navigate the streets of Shibuya and choose between remaining concealed to talk to civilians, shop, and accept quests or exposing your true self to harness your inhuman powers. Your journey will also take you into the alternate world of Another, a fantasy land teeming with ferocious monsters and secrets to uncover.

  • Might and Magic – Freely swap between using evasive maneuvers in Suppressed mode and utilizing magic to deal explosive damage in Liberated mode. Each of the six different playable characters has their own unique abilities, from summoning to aerial attacks.

My Thoughts

The game mechanics are pretty interesting with it two modes. Suppressed mode allows for evasion. Liberated mode let you use magic to deal explosive damage. You freely between the two modes. This reminds me a lot of the form changes. That are staples of Kingdom Hearts' combat.

These two modes also played a role in society and how they will affect your actions. Wizards are feared in the world of Reynatis. Liberation allows to your magic exposes your identity as a wizard. While Suppression allows to blend with society.

Marin and Sari are on opposite sides of society. Marin is a wizard while Sari is an officer. The parallels between these two is reminiscent of Noctis and Stella being on the opposing side of the war in Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

While Kingdom Hearts fans wait for the next entries of the beloved series. Reynatis may be the game that scratches that inch for more Kingdom Hearts. Also Reynatis has influences from Versus XII, a fantasy that never became a reality. A fantasy based on reality that so many players including myself never got to play.
